STOP! Before you publish your book, please read this.

Please, please, please make sure you do these five things to give your book the professional look, feel and quality it deserves.

Because no matter what, your book represents you!

After all the time, energy and effort you've put into writing your book, the last thing you want is for the finished product to fall short of its potential.

Here are five things I encourage every author to consider before publishing.

1. Invest in a Professional Front and Back Cover

I've seen so many beautifully written books let down by covers that, quite frankly, look like a dog's dinner!

Think about your potential reader for a moment.

Imagine your book is a delicious treat sitting in a café display cabinet. Would its appearance entice someone to stop, take a closer look and want to know more?

Your book cover works in much the same way.

It doesn't need to be an elaborate piece of art, but it does need to look professional, appeal to your intended audience and reflect what's inside.

Your title and subtitle should also spark curiosity and speak to your reader's needs, interests or desires.

Remember, your cover is often the first impression someone has of your book. Make it count!

2. Hire a Professional Editor

Please, for all that is good in the world of books, hire a professional editor!

There is nothing worse than buying a book you're excited to read, only to discover that the sentences don't flow, there are spelling mistakes and the grammar is all over the place.

See how frustrating that would be?

These errors interrupt the reading experience and can take away from the message you're trying to share.

Your readers are investing their time and money in your book. They're expecting to learn something, feel something or be taken on a journey through your storytelling.

Professional editing helps ensure your message comes across clearly and your readers can enjoy the experience you intended to create.

You've worked hard on your manuscript. Give it the professional attention it deserves.

3. Develop a Successful Author's Mindset

There's a difference between writing a book and stepping into your identity as a published author.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with simply enjoying writing!

But if your goal is to become a published author, your mindset will play an important role in your journey.

Publishing can bring up all sorts of fears and limiting beliefs.

Who am I to publish a book?

Who would want to read my story?

What if people judge me?

What if I have to speak publicly or put myself out there?

Sound familiar?

The fear of being seen, sharing your work and stepping outside your comfort zone can feel overwhelming.

And yes, you can absolutely publish a book while experiencing these thoughts and feelings.

But it's important to recognise them and work through them rather than allowing them to hold you back.

For many successful authors, developing a positive and resilient mindset is an ongoing practice.

Believe that you have something worth sharing, even when those little doubts creep in.

4. Start Marketing Before You Publish

A lot of authors think writing the book is the hardest part.

Sorry to break it to you, but that's not always the case!

For many authors, marketing their book can be an even bigger challenge.

It often takes more time, energy and money than expected to get your book out into the world and into the hands of readers.

You can hire marketing specialists, PR agencies, Amazon advertising experts and other professionals to help.

However, it's still important to understand what marketing involves and be prepared for the work ahead.

My advice? Don't wait until your book is published to start thinking about marketing.

Start building your foundations early.

This might include:

  • Establishing your presence on social media

  • Creating an author website

  • Starting a YouTube channel

  • Appearing as a guest on podcasts

  • Building an email list

  • Connecting with communities interested in your topic or genre

And don't be afraid to get creative!

There are so many ways to market a book beyond the traditional approaches.

Explore opportunities that feel authentic to you, align with your message and help you connect with the people your book is intended for.

The earlier you start building those connections, the stronger your foundation will be when it's time to launch.

5. Get the Support You Need

You don't have to do everything yourself!

If you're struggling to:

  • 📕 Write or finish your book

  • 📕 Find a professional editor

  • 📕 Get your book cover professionally designed

  • 📕 Understand where or how to publish

  • 📕 Develop a marketing strategy for your book

Please know that support is available.

Whether it's working with someone like me who can guide you through different stages of the publishing process, or engaging individual professionals who specialise in particular areas, you have options.

Writing and publishing a book is a significant undertaking, and asking for help doesn't make your achievement any less meaningful.

You don't have to know everything, do everything or figure it all out alone.

Sometimes, the right support makes all the difference.

One Last Thing: Believe in Yourself and Your Book

Yes, I know this falls under mindset, but I believe it's important enough to say again.

Believe in yourself. And believe in your book.

Because if you don't believe in what you've written, how can you expect others to believe in it?

Trust that you wrote your book for a reason.

Trust that your words, experiences, knowledge or imagination have something valuable to offer.

Whether you're writing a children's book, a self-help book, a memoir or something entirely different, your story deserves the opportunity to be shared.

And if you're wondering whether you're ready, remember that you don't need to have everything figured out before taking the next step.

Your story matters. Your voice matters. And someone out there may be waiting for the very book you're writing.

So, who are you not to share it?
